To Rivendell, Master Gamgee

Lizz and Stink at Rivendell, Walnut Creek, CA, 2012

I was poking through some old touring pics and found a few from the Hwy 101 tour. Lizz and I made it out to Rivendell in Walnut Creek, CA that year–I don’t remember why my sister wasn’t with us for this picture because she was touring that summer. If you don’t know, Rivendell makes the very best bikes in the world. That is a totally biased statement–but, but its true! Riv creator Grant Peterson himself took the time to talk with us even though we were really smelly and had dead dear parts with us. For being the cult-king of the touring/back-to-steal movement, Grant is a gracious and down to earth fellow. He gave us a copy of Edmund Lear’s A Book of Nonsense. It has become one of my favorites because it really is nonsense. These pics were lifted off the Rivendell Blug from 2012 .

To clarify, Lizzy has a love for natural history and the skeletal structures. I think its pretty cool. Anyways, its hard to pass by all the bone bits in the road ditches, so we maybe had a few skulls with us. Now that I think about it, I can see why people might think that’s yukky. We learned soon after this tour that there can be some fairly stiff fines for this kind of ‘shoulder shopping’, so watch out!

Note: Peanut Butter and soda, breakfast of athletes everywhere.

Note: there is a bunch of junk on that cycle.

In less than 60 days Lizzy and I will be leaving town to ride around the United States. Assuming all goes will, we hope to be back at Rivendell in November. I’d like to tell Mr. Peterson that 20,000 miles + and the Hunq is going strong.

(Little known fact: Her name is Amelia Monticella EarHunq, after Amelia Earhart because she was an awesome lady, and also after Thomas Jefferson’s house–the Monticello–because it was a perpetual work-in-progress)
